how is this different from hyperacidity? what are its symptoms?

hyperacidity is just acid reflux... gastritis is more severe. its when the lining of the stomach gets inflamed because of drinking and other stuff.

my uncle was an alcoholic and he had gastritis.

hyperacidity sounds mild compared to gastritis.

they can both be cured by antacids.

I agree. Tums or Rolaids are OK for my hyperacidity.
