Cold sores are caused by a virus and are spread by kissing or by clothing. Cold sores are usually caused by herpes type 1 and is a cousin of the famous herpes type 2 that you read about in health class. Like the herpes virus, type 1 is contagious, and like the herpes virus, type 1 never really goes away. Once you have it, you have it for life.
