Listed below are some of the effects of smoking and drinking while pregnant:

Smoking:

* Smoking increases the risk of miscarriage.
* Smoking nearly doubles the risk of low birth-weight.
* Smoking increases the risk of birth defects.
* Smoking increases the risk of premature birth, which increases the risk of chronic disabilites like mental retardation, cerebral palsy, and learning problems.
* Smoking increases the risk of placenta previa and placental abruption, conditions that can result in heavy bleeding during delivery and pose danger to both mother and child.
* Smoking increases the risk of having a baby who is jittery and difficult to soothe.

Drinking:

* Drinking alcohol increases the risk of low birth-weight.
* Drinking alcohol increases the risk of birth defects, both mild and severe.
* Drinking alcohol increases the risk of miscarriage.
* Drinking alcohol may cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

Obviously both are dangerous to the mother and baby.

If you think about it smoking and drinking is already bad for your health whilst you are not pregnant, so it could not be any better when you are carrying a child right?

Lorraine

Do you have a death wish for your unborn child?

HappilyExpectingJane

Not a good idea. Not good when you are not pregnant, so much more when you are carrying. Besides killing yourself and your unborn child, second hand smoke kills so you are not doing other people any favors as well.

Worse case scenario: You deliver a stillborn baby!

The baby of a DJ in my city is sickly because she continued to smoke while pregnant! the kids are always the one's who suffer!

alryt cool guys, thank you for all the advice. well I do smoke occasionally. I don't think I will ever if I'm pregnant. (",)

another incentive to quit smoking!

Obviously both are dangerous to the mother and baby.

But the mom knows what she is doing, the baby does not!

karensmith

This is too bad and too sad! And I agree with Danielle. The baby is the innocent victim always.
