Late period, negative pregnancy test.

Me and my boyfriend thought I was pregnant, I couldn't remember how long ago my last period was, and I haven't gotten it yet. But the pregnancy test said negative. I'm pretty sure my last period was VERY light. And I've been off and on on my birth control. I'm just so confused. help me?

Britt - a couple of things here - one, I don't know how old you are, but since you asked for advice, here it is from this mama!

Birth control needs to be used correctly in order to work. If you don't use it according to the directions, you may as well not use it at all. You may want to talk to your doctor about a different method that requires less memory (one of the new safer IUDs, an implant, the shot, etc) - I can sympathize with forgetting to use it or having issues with it, but it's important if you want to prevent pregnancy. Also, keep in mind that nothing is 100% effective even if used correctly 100% of the time, and that the only method of birth control other than abstinence that helps prevent transmission of STDs and AIDs is the properly used condom.

Another thing - and something I've preached to my 20 something daughters :). Mark your period in your calendar. Keep track of when it happens, how long it lasts, and if anything was unusual about it. I started doing that when I was in my 20s and it became a habit that has helped me over the years - it can help you pinpoint why your mood just went nuts and why you want to eat everything in the house (a few days before your period), when to start wondering if you are pregnant or not, etc. It's just a good proactive habit (like that monthly breast self-exam that you should also be doing!).

If you are sexually active, you also need annual checks by your dr. If it has been awhile, and also to check on alternative bc methods, I strongly encourage you to get an appt for a check-up.

That's what I'd tell my girls.

Good luck :)
