I think it has something to do with hormonal imbalance again as the body compensates for the weight loss. but it should return to normal.

how can weight loss affect periods?

zero

It can and it does. Fat cells contribute to hormone production. It is in fact very common in some areas of sport for women to "shut off" their period when there's some competition or so. I know that I have a weight at which my mens gets irregular and after more weight loss stops (been underweight for a long time). It has many unhealthy side effects (check Wikipedia).
