What your describing is an irregular period. This is common and nothing to worry about. Periods can be heavy and thick, or light and thin. Reasonable cramping is normal. The trouble with irregular periods is that there is no way for me to tell you what the best time is to conceive.
You can try using a ovulation test kit. How these work is that you use a special thermometer to test your temperature every morning before you get out of bed. Your temperature spikes when you ovulate. Your pharmacy should have the kit in the birth control isle.
