birth control over 40

what are ideal birth control methods for women over 40? Coz I heard that the Pill is out when a woman reaches this age, right?

Annabell

Hormonal methods are out. So if you already have kids or dont want to have more you can have your tubes tied. There's also the ever dependable condom :-)

I usually suggest whatever is handy at the moment. Condoms do not only protect against STD but also against pregnancy. Diaphragms and other barrier methods are also OK. Then of course, there's the usual withdrawal & calendar methods...

There are birth control pills that have very low doses of estrogen that can be taken by women over 40... along with the IUD especially made for women this age.

women who can use this have to be healthy and non smokers because of the increase risk of stroke.

This is good news considering that lots of women are still sexually active at this age and the pill is very convenient.

huh? i thought women over 40 and who are on the pill are at risk for stroke and heart disease even with low dose pills. also this is the start of perimenopause for some women, so the hormones can be bad for those taking oral contraceptives.

I read about the increased risk for stroke too. Well, I still have a long way to go before 40, but I like taking the pill which is why I asked this question. Maybe I can switch back to condoms seeing as they are also convenient and easy to use!

If you use Yaz and Yasmin, it does not matter what age you are you are at risk for stroke when you use those two!
