I know that STD screens are usually visual or with blood test. But can they detect STD with just a urine sample?

Yes. Most sexually transmitted diseases can be detected through urine sample. Herpes and HIV, I think, needs blood sampling to test for the presence of such virus.

There are certain STDS that require the blood test and other types that are screened through urine. So it depends on what they think you've got.
