if you have been taking the same birth control pill for 8 or more years. is it possible that your body could become use to the pill and not be effective anymore?

so my girlfriend just got back on the pill.... I'm not sure exactly which one but we're wondering exactly how long we have to continue to use condoms before the pill will be 100 percent effective..... can anyone tell me the right answer.... and please don't guess! If you know for sure, I'd appreciate the info!

The pill begins to become effective once it starts beign used. However, to be fully effective, most experts recommend waiting at least one cycle (a month) before expecting the pill to provide maximum protection. However, it is important to remember that, unless your girlfriend takes the pill everyday at the exact same time without missing a pill or taking it late, it will not be 100%. With perfect use (taking it everyday, at the exact same time), the pill is still only 99% effective, so there is a chance of pregnancy.

I agree with that, but would add that in actual use studies the Pill has a failure rate of about 7% per year. The figure is closer to 14% for cohabiting couples. Using condoms with the Pill will help keep that failure rate closer to 1%.

Hi Leann --
That is unlikely. If it's been working well for you all this time, then it won't become less effective. As you age, your fertility level declines naturally anyway, so if anything your chances of pregnancy will keep going down.
That's not to say that a surprise pregnancy can't happen at any time...

I've been on birthcontrol pills 4 months now. Recemtly *almost 26 days ago* I lost the pack i was currently using....I only had maybe 4 days left so i simply started the new pack since my doctor said some women didnt wait for their periods(I had foudn the other pack and decided to finish both packs to make it like i only missed one period). im on day 19 and I recently had spotting but today it turned into a full blown period and im still taking the hormone pills! Does this mean the pill is not even working for me and I can still get pregnant? Im quite diligent about taking the pill the same time everyday...My boyfriend and I are rather worried it's not working....What's happening??
