I was just wondering if someone could tell me exactly what's supposed to be in your prenatal vitamins. No one has told me what types of vitamins i should be taking, or why, and i am kind of concerned about taking anything without some info first.

Prenatal vitamins should be started before you are pregnant and continued during your pregnancy (if you didn't start before you conceived, don't worry. Just start taking them now). WHile I don;t blame you for being concerned about what you are putting into your body (every future mom should be!), rest assured that prenatal vitamins are designed specifically for pregnant women and are therefore considered to be safe to take during pregnancy. As for what they contian: basically just extra vitamins and minerals that you normally get from food. Because your need for these vitamins goes up during pregnancy, its easier to take a supplement so you know that you are gettting what you need everyday rather than try to eat all the food you would have to eat to get the same amount of vitamins.

You should eat foods rich in folic acids or take folic acid tablets until the end of the first trimester. This protects against spina-bifida.
