A friend of mine's mother was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and now I'm worried I might get it. Does anyone know how likely a woman is to get to cancer if there is no history of it in her family? I heard that you don't need to have a family history of cancer to get breast cancer. Does anyone know if there's anything I can do to prevent getting it?

I am sorry to hear that someone close to you has breast cancer. It is a very destructive and terrible illness. I have heard that you are much more likely to get breast cancer if someone in your family has it, but I suppose that some people get it without any family history. I haven't heard of any preventative measures, but you should get your breast examined by your doctor every year. That way, if you do get a lump it can be caught really quickly. Good luck!

Doing regular breast self exams is one of the best ways to detect breast cancer early. And detecting it early gives you a better prognosis. You should check about once a month at about the same time every month, since your breasts tend to change size and shape during your menstrual cycle. If you're unsure about how to do a breast self exam, make an appointment with your doctor and she'll show you how to do it. Good Luck!
